A current study on pet obesity by The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention has discovered that the number of US cats and dogs classified as overweight or obese has gone up to 58 and 54 percent, respectively, in 2015. We are killing our pets with "acts of love". And this is not an understatement. The real reality is, obesity kills. Study after study have linked obesity with type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, many forms of cancer and decreased life expectancy from complications of the illness or early euthanasia due to non treatment of the secondary diseases. Hugs have ZERO calories! We need to stop throwing Fido a doggy bone and Fluffy a Pounce treat to say we love them. Pet them, cuddle them, walk them. It very well could save their life! And quite honestly it may save their owners too!
