textOctober was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While many people are familiar with the human form of the disease, many pet owners are not aware that their female pets may be at risk as well.
In female dogs that have not been spayed cancerous mammary tumors occur more commonly than any other type of tumor. The risk of a female dog developing mammary tumors if she has been spayed before her first heat cycle is 0.05%, or 5 in 10,000. After her first heat cycle the risk jumps to 8% and after her second heat cycle 25%. This means that a dog allowed to have two or more heat cycles before being spayed is 500 times more likely to develop mammary tumors than dogs spayed prior to their first heat cycle. Most mammary tumors develop in dogs between 6 and 10 years of age and occur in the mammary tissue nearest the hind legs. Of the mammary tumors that grow in dogs, half will be benign and half malignant. Malignant tumors have a grave prognosis; currently there are no chemotherapy or radiation treatments available for mammary cancer in dogs.

Mammary tumors are the third most common type of cancer found in cats. The risk of mammary tumors in cats that have not been spayed is about half of that for dogs. Spaying cats before 6 months old decreases their risk by 91%, between 6 months and 12 months their risk is decreased by 86% and between 12 and 24 months by 11%. Spaying after 2 years old does not decrease the risk. The incidence of malignancy of mammary tumors in cats is much higher than that in dogs, running as high as 90% with as many as 80% of cats having cancer that has spread to other organs. The survival time after initial diagnosis is usually less than a year. There are no effective chemotherapy or radiation treatments for cats with mammary cancer.

Spaying your pet before her first heat cycle is the best way to protect her from mammary cancer. If she wasn’t spayed early we recommend that you exam her mammary tissue routinely checking for lumps and bumps. Belly rubbing time is a great time to do this! If you find a lump or think something has changed, don’t wait. Bring her in to see a doctor as soon as you can; the earlier mammary cancer is found, the better her chances of survival.
